Name of Chancellor Recommendation Leaks
Several websites have posted the name of the Metropolitan Council's recomendation to be the next Chancellor of the OCA. Archpriest John Jillions was first named on the Orthodox Forum. OCANews.org had been withholding his name at the request of the Lesser Synod.
Fr. Jillions is a 1977 graduate of McGill University and has a M.Div (1979) and D.Min (2005) from St. Vladimir's Seminary. A dual Canadian and American citizen, Fr. Jillions has served in OCA mission parishes in New Jersey, in Brisbane Australia (for the OCA), and more recently at the OCA's Canadian National Cathedral in Ottawa.
For many years Fr. John was the Principal of the Insitute for Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge, England. He received his PhD from the Aristotelian University in Thessaloniki during this time (2002). He speaks both Russian and Greek fluently.
Married with three adult sons, Fr. Jillions is currently an associate professor of Eastern Christian studies and director of the M. Div program at the bilingual Catholic St. Paul University, which is federated with the University of Ottawa, in the capital of Canada.
Criticism of the choice has been largely limited to the fact that Fr. Jillion's late sister, Alla, was married to Protodeacon Eric Wheeler, the former Treasurer of the OCA, who has been a key figure in the recent Times of Troubles.
If confirmed as OCA Chancellor this coming week by the Synod, and he accepts the position as offered, it is expected Fr. John will begin his ministry at the beginning of next year.
