Archimandrite Zacchaeus (Wood) Placed on Leave

In a carefully worded statement from Syosset today it was announced that the highly visible Archimandrite Zacchaeus (Wood), representative of the Orthodox Church in America in Moscow , had been placed on a leave of absence and recalled to the United States." While avoiding the word "suspension", the statement noted that Fr. Zacchaeus is "prohibited from exercising any liturgical or sacramental ministry". (Read more here.)

A General Thank You

"A general Thank You to all who posted in reply to my recent reflection, both pro and con. I am assuming that the questions posed to me on the public post, were rhetorical questions not requiring an answer. Several opponents inferred a license and a position on my part that is nowhere suggested in my text, but I suppose on some level that can be more gratifying than to simply ask the author. I reiterate one sentence in my essay that seems rather clear:

“Affirming the need for intimacy and human warmth does not defacto translate into an affirmation of gay marriage.”

How then, do my detractors infer that I am promoting same sex unions? I am especially grateful to some individuals, both for and against my statements, who took the time to call or mail me personally. I was edified by those exchanges, and I hope I was able to answer questions directly and adequately.  I can only return to the principle plea of my essay, which is a call to restraint and a more careful attentiveness to persons, to real human beings. For my part I promise to try harder on each score.

Alexis Vinogradov

July 17, 2011

(Editor's note: A  "Thank you" asking for a "general call to restraint" amid "careful attentiveness to persons, real human beings" is a good place to end this current thread of reflections and discussions, lest we all be caught up in theological dramas that don't exist -- and manufactured crises for purposes other than the pastoral questions raised by recent events. I echo Fr. Vinogradov in thanking all who have written on this topic recognizing that there was no "pro" or "con" here, no "sides", but real concern being expressed by all whatever their perspective.)

OCA Updates

      OCA Launches Redesigned Website

The initial relaunch of the redesigned OCA.org is scheduled for this evening, according to sources in Syosset. This is one phase of many upgrades and and new features that will take place over the next year.

     • NY  Deanery Adopts Resolution For Next AAC Cutting OCA Assessment

The New York Deanery has offered a resolution to the upcoming NY-NJ Diocesean Assembly (July 19th in Endicott, NY) advocating a 50% cut in the current OCA Assessment. You can read the text of the resolution here.

      • Former Archbishop Dmitri (Royster) Reportedly Stronger

In an email to diocesan clergy today, Fr. Marcus Burch, Chancellor of the Diocese of The South wrote: "There have been several reports in the last day or so of His Eminence, Archbishop Dmitri's, deteriorating health. I have spoken with both Fr John Anderson and Milos Konjevich who are close to the situation in Dallas. Vladyka Dmitri has been seen by a doctor, he is receiving more intensive and attentive in-house care, and he is eating better. While he continues to be weak, he actually seems to be improving. While none of us clearly sees the future, it does seem that these changes in the Archbishop's health are more incremental in nature, and part of the what the Psalmist expresses in Psalm 90.10: 'The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.'.....Please pray for the Archbishop, asking that God will grant him strength and healing."

SYNOD MINUTES REVEAL DECISION:

+JONAH "ON LEAVE"

The official OCA press release, posted shortly after 10 PM this evening, was brief, but its message clear:

“ Upon instruction of the Holy Synod of Bishops, minutes from the pre-lenten retreat in which they participated February 22-25, 2011 in Santa Fe, NM are now available in PDF format HERE.

What the 6 pages of Minutes themselves make clear is that Metropolitan Jonah was indeed placed on an official “Leave of Absence” by the Synod last week in Santa Fe, that the Metropolitan agreed to the Leave, and further, the Metropolitan agreed he would abide by this decision of the Bishops. ANTIOCHIAN BISHOP MARK (MAYMON) FORMALLY RELEASED TO OCA; TO ADMINISTER DIOCESE OF SOUTH

The OCA made the announcement earlier this evening in a posting on OCA.org. It reads:

"In a letter dated December 8, 2010, His Eminence, Metropolitan Philip, Primate of the Self-Ruled Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, granted a canonical release to His Grace, Bishop Mark [Maymon] to enter the canonical jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church in America.

This action was a response to an official request made by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, on behalf of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America.

Upon receipt of the letter from Metropolitan Philip, Metropolitan Jonah expressed his "appreciation for the harmonious relations of the Orthodox Church in America and the Antiochian Archdiocese, as shown most recently in the release of Bishop Mark.... We welcome His Grace, Bishop Mark into the Orthodox Church in America and look forward to close collaboration in ministry and mission."

Effective January 1, 2011, Bishop Mark will serve as Auxiliary to Metropolitan Jonah with the title "Bishop of Baltimore" and will administer the OCA Diocese of the South.

Additional information may be found on the web site of the Antiochian Archdiocese at www.antiochian.org."

Alaskan Chancellor Describes Current Episcopal Selection Process As "Arranged Marriage"

In a recent letter to OCANews.org, Fr. Michael Oleksa, Acting Chancellor of the Diocese of Alaska and a member of the Metropolitan Council, explained the current situation in the Diocese regarding its vacant cathedra. Fr. Michael writes:

"I am writing only to clarify what has been happening in Alaska as we attempt to discern God's Will and nominate a new bishop for this diocese.

Many Alaska Native cultures, until quite recently, practiced match-making and arranged marriages, relationships initiated or promoted by the parents of a prospective bride or groom. Usually, the proposal was then accepted or rejected by one of the pair, but obviously, one could consider only a single option at a time. No one ever had to choose between several simultaneous suitors. (Read more here.)

“All of our Demons are Grey”

by Nicholas Chapman, Herkimer NY

In 1986 I made my second visit to the Soviet Union and was able to meet with the Orthodox dissident and writer Vladimir Zelinsky. In relation to the situation of the Church in that country at that time he made a statement that has remained with me ever since. On many occasions it helped me when struggling to come to terms with human frailty as seen in the life of our Church. His simple statement: “All of our demons are grey.” (Read more here.)

St. Maximos the Confessor produced some of the most insightful reflections on Christology that our Church possesses. At least one point he made applies directly to us today in the midst of our ongoing ecclesiastical dramas within Orthodoxy. (Read more here.)

DAMASCUS DECIDES

• Antiochian Synod Reduces US Bishops to Auxiliaries
• +Philip given "Full Jurisdiction" over  one Archdiocese as 9 Dioceses are reduced
• Synod makes clear "Self-Rule" ends in Damascus

A short statement, in English and Arabic, signed by all the members of Synod of Antioch, is scheduled to be posted on the Archdiocesan website later today. In the statement the Damascus Synod, which met August 17-20 near Saidnaya, Syria, offers clarification to a controversy that has wracked its American Archdiocese for the past 18 months, announcing that the "...bishops of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America... are Auxiliary Bishops under the direction of the Metropolitan, who has the full jurisdiction over the Archdiocese." In addition the statement calls into question the American Archdiocese's "Self-Rule", re-affirming that the Damascus Synod "... under the chairmanship of the Patriarch, is the final and supreme authority in all matters related to all Archdioceses of the Patriarchate of Antioch." Lest there be any controversy over the meaning of the announcement, as happened in a previous synodal statement in June 2009 (read that here), the text concludes: "The Holy Synod affirms the Arabic Test (sic) is considered as the only reference." • Kiev, Ukraine
The Synod of dissident Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate, led by the former Russian Orthodox Metropolitan of Kiev, Filaret, has published a letter to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Patriarch Kyrill of Moscow concerning the work of the Inter-Orthodox Preparatory Commission that dealt with the issues of autocephaly and autonomy. The letter has an interesting reference to the OCA. The Ukrainian Synod points out: (Read more here).

Two Reactions From Readers

• Los Angeles, CA
Metropolitan Philip's recent denial of clergy reports that he would seek to have the Self-Rule of the Antiochian Archdiocese withdrawn at the next Synod meeting in Damascus has drawn a similar denial from Fr. Michel Najim, Dean of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Los Angeles concerning reports he was preparing an academic paper on auxiliary bishops for the same meeting. In a letter to OCANews.org Fr. Michel writes: "....let me state very clearly that I have never been asked by anyone to prepare a paper or a statement regarding the episcopacy. This is a complete and utter falsehood, and I would like you to publicly retract this statement." Fr. Michel continued: "Your posting of false reports creates confusion among the brethren, and is extremely harmful to the welfare of the Orthodox Church." (Read more here).

Draft OCA Strategic Plan Posted

A draft copy of the OCA Strategic Plan has been posted on the website of the Archdiocese of Canada by Archbishop Seraphim. The 20 page plan is accompanied by a 30 page Power Point presentation. Both will be presented to the Archdiocesan Assembly scheduled for July 26- 30 in Victoria, British Columbia.

In posting the documents +Seraphim writes:  "Since the Strategic Plan is to be important enough in our Assembly (among the first to encounter it), I believe it only fair that we give those who will participate an opportunity to view it before they arrive. In this way, the Delegates will not see the Draft Plan for the first time at the Assembly, but they will have had time to look at the "slides" and the Plan, and to prepare questions for the Presenters on the Wednesday session(s), and, even better, suggestions for the further development of the Plan." Decoding "The Message"

The careful reader may discover much in today's carefully drafted "Message" offered by the Episcopal Assembly which concluded its meeting yesterday evening.

First, it is not clear to whom the message is addressed: the first personage mentioned is "The Triune God", who presumably knew what was happening before it did, and has little need to be informed. The second mention goes to the "Primates and Representatives of the Orthodox Autocephalous Churches". Third goes to "We, as the Episcopal Assembly..." In short the bishops were primarily talking to themselves and their "Leaders" abroad, which is probably a good thing since many of them have never spoken to each other before.... (Read more here.)

No News From The Synod...

The Synod of the OCA, which met this week in Syosset, has posted little information concerning its decisions, nor have the bishops posted any more information concerning the meeting on their respective diocesan websites as the press release announcing the meeting indicated they would. (Read more here)

At the center of the interest lies the Report of the St. Tikhon's Investigative Committee (STIC), an investigation begun in March 2009, and expanded into a Special Committee in June 2009. The Committee was charged with "determining the nature and extent of possible financial mismanagement alleged to have occurred at St. Tikhon's monastery during the past several years." According to Metropolitan Jonah "evidence of financial mismangement and possible wrong-doing had been discovered."  At the time of the Special Committee's establishment the Synod stated it "wanted to continue the investigation as transparently as possible".  Towards this goal the Synod shared the Investigative Committee's newly-completed report with the Metropolitan Council earlier this month, but requested members not to make its contents known until after the entire Synod had a chance to review the Report. Sources close to St. Tikhon's report, however, that Bishop Tikhon met with the former Metropolitan, +Herman, alone, to discuss the report with him prior to the Synod meeting.

A request by OCANews.org to the Chancery following the conclusion of the Synod meeting, inquiring on the status of the Report, has received no reply as of this posting.

+Archbishop Job Unexpectedly

Succumbs to Pneumonia

The Archbishop passed away at 11:25 this morning at a hotel in Maumee, Ohio, where he had stopped for the night on his way from a deanery meeting in Cleveland back to Chicago. He was taken by paramedics to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived. Fr. John Zdinak, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, spoke with the Archbishop this morning, and offered details of the Archbishop's passing on Ancient Faith Radio here.

Ironically, the Midwest Diocesan Council committee organized to detail the process and schedule by which +Job's successor was to be nominated, in an effort to be proactive in light of the Archbishop's announced retirement in 2011, had its first telephone conference call last evening.

The OCA has posted a brief biography of the late Archbishop together with details of his funeral arrangements in both Chicago and Cleveland here.   All those Orthodox Christians who uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and conciliarity in Church life have lost champion today, as well as a gentle teacher of the spiritual freedom the true life in Christ brings. Little of what has been accomplished in the OCA in the last four years would have been possible but for the late Archbishop's courage and steadfastness in the face of constant opposition.

May his memory be eternal.

"The Board of Trustees of St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary, meeting in South Canaan, PA this 7th day of August, 2009 states and affirms:

"Collectively, we have no interest in, nor see any need for, a merger with any other theological institution now or in the foreseeable future.

"We support the direction of St. Tikhon's Seminary and declare that the seminary is operating effectively, efficiently and profitably and will not be closed. We are pleased with the progress we have made in the past few years and will labor towards continued improvement in all facets of the school.

"We support the concept of the greater cooperation between all Orthodox Theological Seminaries and pledge to diligently pursue the accomplishment of that goal."

BISHOP MARK:

Synod affirms "we were not consecrated as ....auxiliaries"

Read his letter to diocesan clergy here.

SYNOD OF ANTIOCH RELEASES STATEMENT REGARDING FEBRUARY 24th

"The Holy Synod of the See of Antioch,

after long discussion and deep deliberation of the Synodal decision of February 24, 2009, and with the recommendations of His Beatitude, the Patriarch, it affirms that the nature of the Episcopate is one and the same to all those who are consecrated as bishops,
The Holy Synod of Antioch affirms and reminds that all bishops of the Antiochian Archdiocese of North America are bishops who assist the Metropolitan,
And that, furthermore, any diocese of the one united Archdiocese, under any circumstances, cannot be considered independent Archdiocese. The Holy Synod of Antioch alone has the prerogative to establish Archdioceses in the See of Antioch.

Issued June,17, 2009"

Unfortunately, according to multiple sources present at the Damascus meeting, attempts were made by supporters of  Metropolitan Philip, who was not present, to alter the careful and intentional wording of this decision. According to reports emanating from Damascus it is fully expected that these same forces will now attempt to alter the text of the official version and distribute "modified" English versions as widely as possible to support their interpretation of the decision - much as occurred with respect to the Archdiocesan Constitution. The key point is that the translation specifically uses the phrase "bishops who assist the Metropolitan" rather than the term "auxiliaries" as sought by others.

A link to the Arabic original may be found here.

Meeting Ends: Statement Awaited

The meeting of the Synod of Antioch concluded Friday morning, June 19, with the issuance of a brief Statement regarding the situation in North America. Various reports from the meeting indicate that the gathering was very contentious and resulted in a decision that was not unanimous.

It is reported that those who voted against the Statement of the Synod were those normally aligned with Metropolitan Philip.

As soon as the official English language translation of the Statement is released, it will be posted on OCANews.org.

AOCA Chancellors Render Strongest Possible Verdict Against Recent Synodal Decisions: "Invalid", "Inapplicable" "Inconsistent" & "Ill-Advised"

In a 15 page Opinion offered to Metropolitan Philip, the Local Synod and the Board of Trustees of the Antiochian Archdiocese, dated May 13th, the Chancellors of the Archdiocese shredded both the February 24th decision of the Synod of Antioch and the April 24th decision of the Local Synod as "invalid", "inapplicable" "inconsistent" and "ill-advised". Metropolitan Council, Lesser Synod Begin Joint Meeting Today

The agenda for the extraordinary meeting of the Metropolitan Council and Lesser Synod, which has already been detailed (read that here), will include important questions concerning finances, legal matters, and the future administration of the OCA. The meeting promises to be intense, as the Metropolitan has spoken of the "uncanonical" nature of the current arrangement of "responsibilities" given by the OCA Statute, and the "confusion" that has arisen because of it in recent meetings with clergy in both the New York -Washington diocese, as well as the Diocese of the South.

It is little wonder, therefore, that the meeting will begin with a three hour retreat led by Metropolitan Jonah on the topic of "Spiritual Progress" which will attempt to deal with the role of primacy in the Church. According to the Metropolitan, the retreat's themes have already been dealt with in a preliminary way, in a paper given last summer at St. Vladimir's Seminary entitled "Episcopacy, Primacy, and the Mother Churches: A Monastic Perspective". (Read that paper here.)

As the Metropolitan Council and the Lesser Synod have little history of joint meetings, it remains to be seen how difficult topics are to be dealt with, and according to what rules. And difficult topics abound. Among the more controversial to watch for are:

-reports on the implementation of the Special Investigative Committee findings - especially as regards excess benefit transactions during the former administration;

- the status of the lawsuit(s) against and by the former Chancellor Robert Kondratick - and his continuing status as an employee of an OCA parish;

-the results of the investigations into St. Tikhon's monastery and bookstore finances during the reign of former Metropolitan Herman;

- and how the lawsuit by the retired Bishop of Alaska, Nikolai, as well the lawsuit by Kristine Koumentakos, are to be addressed.
Nor do the issues end there: the Council and Lesser Synod will discuss the future of the OCA by laying the groundwork for the Strategic Planning process adopted by the All-American Council. Will the Metropolitan Council be proactive in the new Committee's formation and goals - or will the Synod attempt to fully control the process? Will this meeting continue the cooperation and transparency begun at the last joint meeting of the entire Synod and Council last Spring - or have things changed? Several members fear old habits die hard and that talk of conciliarity and openness remains as it was in earlier times; that is, mostly talk. Prior to the meeting  Syosset sent out a "suggested" list attributed the Metropolitan of which Council members should serve on which committees - without asking members their particular skills, interests or concerns. A quick and quiet protest led to the list being dropped in favor of the previous tradition of members self-selecting their areas of responsibility. Be on the lookout for daily postings about the meeting on OCA.org. What is said, or not said, about the above will give a clear indication as to the answers that have emerged.

In so doing we might notice some things anew, in a different way,or perhaps, even for the first time.  So it is with the following article, orginally published in the Spring of 2001 in the New York Daily News which has only recently come to my attention. It is of historical interest only now, but I have highlighted a passage of interest. (Read more here)

(9:00 AM)

ON EVE OF SIC REPORT

+HERMAN REQUESTS MEDICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE

In an announcement posted on OCA.org this morning, Metropolitan Herman has requested a "medical leave of absence". The brief announcement reads:

"His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman has submitted a letter to the Holy Synod of Bishops, in which he requests a medical leave of absence. Metropolitan Herman is scheduled for lumbar spine surgery on Tuesday, September 9, 2008.

The Holy Synod will review His Beatitude's request at their session on Thursday, September 4, 2008. Further information will be posted when it becomes available."

The OCA statement is titled: "Impending surgery forces Metropolitan Herman to submit request for medical leave of absence". No mention is made of the forthcoming SIC Report, or as sources have confirmed, the Metropolitan's meeting yesterday afternoon with three of the four officers of the OCA. OCA Chancellor Fr. Alex Garklavs, OCA Treasurer Fr. Michael Tassos and OCA Secretary Fr. Eric Tosi met with the Metropolitan in Syosset and encouraged him to resign. The Metropolitan refused.

The SIC Report is scheduled for presentation to the joint meeting of the Synod and Metropolitan Council this morning.

Four New Town Halls Announced

In reponse to criticisms the OCA announced an expansion of its Town Hall meetings yesterday to include gathering in several large metropolitan areas and regions previously omitted in the schedule. Four meetings, all scheduled for July, were added: in Montreal QC; Boston MA, Indianapolis IN, Cleveland OH, and New York City. One previously announced, but unscheduled meeting, in Western Pennsylvania was dropped, while the Orlando meeting was re-scheduled away from the Labor Day holiday itself and put earlier that weekend.
Three Town Halls will be held this coming week, June 24 in Dallas during the Diocesan Assembly, June 26th in San Francisco, during that Diocesan Assembly, and June 28th in Washington DC. A full schedule of all meetings is available here.

Council  Unanimously Asks Synod

To Reverse +Nikolai Decision

In a short letter to the Synod of Bishops of the OCA, the Metropolitan Council has expressed its concern over the crisis in the Diocese of Alaska. The statement, released this evening by Syosset, was adopted by the Council unanimously at its meeting at the Chancery, which ended this afternoon.

The statement, in full, follows:

"Your Beatitude, Your Eminences, Your Graces:

At its spring meeting the Metropolitan Council unanimously approved the following statement to the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America concerning the crisis in the Diocese of Alaska.

After long and heartfelt discussion during our meeting March 31 to April 2, 2008, the Metropolitan Council recognizes that the current crisis in Alaska is a source of paralyzing dysfunction in our whole Church. This problem requires careful investigation and consideration of fact, and we fully understand that the competency to take such action rests with the Holy Synod, to bring it to a decisive outcome without delay.

Taking account of the anxieties, fears and pain of the Orthodox faithful of Alaska, and the deep concern expressed by all the faithful of the Orthodox Church in America, the Metropolitan Council is profoundly disappointed by the Holy Synod's decision to lift the leave of absence of His Grace, Bishop Nikolai before a proper solution has been determined, and respectfully asks our hierarchs - in faith, hope and love - to immediately reverse this decision."

A report on the Council's decisions - including a motion asking the Metropolitan to resign that was eventually tabled - will be posted on Friday.

+NIKOLAI RESTORED BY SYNOD

At 1 PM this afternoon the OCA posted the following:

"SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications] – On March 27, 2008, the Holy Synod of Bishops of The Orthodox Church in America, meeting at the OCA Chancery in Oyster Bay Cove, NY, issued the following statement:

“The Holy Synod of Bishops is aware of the concerns of clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Alaska. It recognizes the expressed desire of their diocesan hierarch to address these concerns, and to take whatever action is necessary to restore peace.

“Therefore, the Holy Synod has designated His Eminence, Archbishop Nathaniel, and His Grace, Bishop Tikhon to travel to Alaska, to inquire into these concerns in the week of March 31, 2008, and to report to the next Regular Meeting of the Holy Synod in May 2008.  “The Holy Synod of Bishops, accepting the assurances of His Grace, Bishop Nikolai of full cooperation with the bishops being sent, withdraws the leave of absence previously imposed.”

The OCA financial scandal has been emerging slowly since 1993. For events prior to January 7, 2006 please read our "Chronology of the Scandal" which offers a history of our Time of Troubles prior to the appearance of this website on that date. All stories relating to the Time of Troubles since that date are posted at left.

Since February 24th, 2009 the Antiochian Archdiocese has been in crisis as well. A  Timeline of their crisis with supporting documentation may be found here.

• Please visit our Share Your Comments link where we encourage all Orthodox Christians to post their views.

• And visit our Reflections link, where prominent Orthodox clergy and laity share longer commentaries on the scandal.
